About Kuma on Valencia
We're Kuma on Valencia, an expansion of our flagship restaurant on Polk Street, Kuma Sushi + Sake. Your friendly neighborhood sushi spot.
Located at 198 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94103, Kuma on Valencia operates as a japanese serving San Francisco in California. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it.
This group covers Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and other Asian cuisines that are not Chinese, and the etiquette varies by kitchen. Japanese and Korean restaurants often take reservations for dinner and may add a service charge for large groups; Thai and Vietnamese spots are usually walk-in and quick-turnover. Spice levels are frequently adjustable on request at Thai, Indian and Sichuan-adjacent menus, so say if you want it mild or hot. Korean BBQ restaurants typically charge per person for all-you-can-eat service with a time limit, and grills are shared at the table. Vietnamese pho shops post bowl sizes (regular or large) and a plate of herbs, bean sprouts and lime is normal to add yourself. Card and tap-to-pay are widely accepted; cash-only is more common at small family-run counters.

San Francisco is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Traffic in San Francisco peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

First time coming here, sushi was really good and nigiri and sashimi offered a lot of different choices. Very convenient that the hot barley tea comes with refills, because it was honestly really good. The store was a little hard to find, as there is no sign above the door. Otherwise, one of the best sushi places Iβve ever been to! :)

Really delicious sushi with a wide and varied menu. We Got the local tofu (very yummy). Chefs nigiri tasting, sashimi tasting and zeitgeist roll. We were split on liking the Nigiri vs Sashimi tasting better, but I liked the Nigiri. Pieces had rice+fish+a little something that really complemented the fish. Zeitgeist roll was so rich and delicious! Like the highest quality fatty drunk food you have ever had. Shrimp Tempura+avocado+eel+fatty tuna it was so decadent.

Had dinner with a friend. We reserved in Resy. We ordered to local sake. We also ordered charashi Deluxe, Sashimi Special & a crudo. We sat at the sushi bar and conversed with the sushi chef. The service was good though sometimes the waitress didnβt see us since we were at the bar. The place looks like any sushi restaurant. Clean and organized. We enjoyed all the sushi they served. They didnβt have uni in this day.

Seated immediately at the bar- our server was super attentive, and it was impressive watching the sushi chefs work so quickly. Fresh sashimi, great rolls (Iβll order anything with toro!), and everything came out timely. Intimate, great-value sushi spot in SF - definitely coming back. I have my eyes on the hamachi Kama + ox and tiger roll next!

Always wanted to dine here. Stopped by the other night. Overall, a pleasant experience, but nothing that wowed me. The food was good - but in a city like San Francisco with so many standout sushi spots, it didnβt quite rise to the top. Iβve had better sushi elsewhere in town, so it didnβt leave a lasting impression. Service, on the other hand, was excellent. Friendly, attentive, and everything came out smoothly, no complaints there. The vibe was fine too: comfortable and low-key, but not particularly memorable or unique in a city full of more visually or atmospherically interesting places. All in all, I enjoyed my meal and appreciated the hospitality, but itβs probably not a place Iβd go back to. Solid, but not that special for a second visit (to me).
